Post subject: Tarantula Question.
Archived from groups: alt>pets>arachnids (more info?)

Hi,

When my Tarantula (Adult Chaco) is getting close to shedding, it will
start to gather up/move around the substrate, eventually blocking up
his tunnel, leaving a small hole, which then gets blocked with web.

Since I've had this spider, it has shedded three times, each time
blocking up it's tunnel/hide with substrate and web shortly before.

Recently, I have noticed the tarantula has been moving the substrate
around again, but this time for no apparent reason. He will gather up
the soil from inside his tunnel, and then drop piles of it outside the
hide. A few minutes later, he will pick up this substrate (which has
just been dropped outside the hide), then take it back inside the
tunnel again. Also, when he is moving about the tank, I have seen him
collect up soil and move it to another part of the tank.

Is my tarantula confused?

Nick.

It's possible that the tarantula is trying to create a humidity chamber,
and moving the substrate in and out is its way of adjusting the
humidity as needed.
